Czech language represents the West Slavic group of Slavic linguistic family. It bears
substantial similarities to other languages of the group - Slovak and Polish. Some 12 million
people speak this language in Central Europe. It is the official language in Czech Republic.
Besides, it is also used in Germany, Canada and the United States of America. Czech falls into
three main dialects: Bohemian, Moravian and Silesian, which correspond to geographic locations
within Czech Republic.
Czech, as well as Ukrainian and Russian, belongs to the Indo-European family of
languages. This origin predetermines the complexity of the language, as its syntax, morphology
and phonetics may seem difficult to speakers of analytical languages like English or German. In
Czech, many words have colloquial, slang and official variations. The word order may change to
emphasize some aspects of the sentence meaning and serves the goal of articulating the topic.
Some Czech words do not contain vowels, while the sound "r" (its phonation is similar to
"zh") is not found in any other world language and is therefore difficult for foreigners to
pronounce. As for the writing system, it was formed primarily by Jan Hus in the 15th century,
who introduced diacritic letters. Currently, Czech alphabet incorporates 42 letters, some of which
contain specific symbols that are not present in the conventional Latin alphabet. Like in German, Czech nouns have three genders, some
of which refer to living object with neuter gender. All in all, there are seven declensions of
nouns and numerals. These features also complicate the issue of learning and understanding
Czech language.
