English language belongs to the West Germanic group. English currently enjoys the
status of the lingua franca around the world. It is extensively used in international politics,
science and technology (especially computer-related issues), economy and cinema. Such wide-

political arena in the 18th and 19th century; currently "the baton" of influence has been handed
down to the United States of America. Its ranking is number 3 or 4 among other world
languages, with about 380 million native speakers. Approximately 150-1000 million people
speak English as a second language. This significant figure may be explained by the fact that a
working knowledge of English is required in many humanitarian and technical fields.
In the historical aspect, English language has been subject to multiple, sometimes even
contrasting influences. Its original "birth place" is the British Isles, inhabited by the settlers from
north-west Germany. Later Britain survived three conquests: the Scandinavian one, the Norman
Conquest and finally the Roman invasion. Every intrusion left its trace in the spoken language.
Throughout centuries the language was finally crystallized into its modern form. The pace of its
evolution can be illustrated by the difficulties modern English speakers have while reading the
classical plays by Shakespeare, despite the fact that they were written only 5 centuries ago.
Currently, English is characterized by stable structure and vocabulary and actively influences
other world languages, still staying hermetic to their impact (this situation conditioned, for
example, Germans' concerns about the anglification of their language).
