• French Language

French language is widely known as a language of love. This popular belief has a linguistic background, as French is the most tuneful among all other world languages. Apart from its musical qualities, French is also one of the most widely-spoken languages of the world. It is the official language in France and 24 other countries of the world. French is the third most spoken language in the Romance linguistic group (the rating places it after Spanish and Portuguese). It is used in Europe, the Pacific district, Africa, the American continent by 110 million native speakers and 65 million people who apply it as a second language.

Before the World War II broke out, French was recognized as the lingua franca, particularly in the areas of international politics and trade. The history of this language is connected with the Roman conquest of France that was then inhabited by the Gauls. In fact, the French nation derives the origin of their language with these vernacular Gaelic tribes, but actually there are only about 200 words of Gaelic etymology in the modern language (they mostly denote the realities of nature). Vulgar Latin brought to the territory of modern France by the Roman soldiers served as the foundation of the language. In the third century, Western Europe was invaded by the Germanic tribes; France was invaded by the Franks. The Frank words constitute approximately 15% of modern French vocabulary.

The principal dialects of French language are Langue d'O?l, Langue d'Oc and the interim Franco-Provensal. Their main difference lies in the geographical distribution that resulted in varying pronunciation rules.

French language has been fruitfully utilized by a constellation of poets and writers. World-known are the Romantic poet Victor Hugo and the French Parnassian school of poets; the rebel poet Arthur Rimbaud and the modernist writer Marseilles Prust. The 19th century writer Flaubert is considered to be the best stylist of the French language. World-wide known is the French school of structural linguistics and literary studies.
